Detroit on the Rise: Detroit People’s Food Co-Op Gets a $25K Boost and a Community Rally

Detroit People’s Food Co-Op is our store. Black-led, community-owned, sitting at 8324 Woodward in the North End — fourteen years in the making before the doors opened in May 2024. It exists because Detroiters decided to feed Detroit themselves.

The co-op’s been honest: the projections were $4 million a year, and they came in closer to $3 million. So the board didn’t fold — they fought. They launched the Mframadan campaign — that’s Ghanaian for “a house built to withstand treacherous conditions” — asking folks to spend $10 more per trip and become owners. The GoFundMe goal was $20,000. The community pushed it past $34,900.

And the love kept coming. Black Leaders Detroit handed the co-op a $25,000 check. Then on Saturday, Oct 10, BLK GRL Conglomerate founder Torie Anderson-Lloyd put out the call and the North End showed up at the store, drawing a crowd.

That’s what ownership looks like. Detroiters don’t just shop at their store — they protect it. The co-op is at 8324 Woodward in the North End. Go spend the extra $10. Become an owner.
