Jalen Duren Locked In: Five Years, $200M, a Piston for Life

Big money, big commitment. Jalen Duren just put pen to paper on a fully guaranteed five-year, $200 million contract extension with the Detroit Pistons. That’s the biggest vote of confidence a team can give — and Duren gave it right back.

The road here wasn’t smooth. Restricted free agency dragged on for months, with reports he felt disrespected and even considered a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer to bet on himself next summer. He chose Detroit instead. When he faced the media after signing, his message was clear: “I am a Detroit Piston. I want to be a Detroit Piston for life. I want to give everything I’ve got to the Pistons and the fans.”

And the 22-year-old center earned it. Duren is coming off a breakout season — career-high 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game, his first All-Star nod, and an All-NBA third-team selection. He was the anchor of a 60-win Pistons squad that finished with the best record in the East.

He even owned his playoff struggles straight up: “It was humbling, I just need to get better… I’m man enough to get my ass in the gym and work on those things and get better. I’m not trying to run from anything.” That’s the kind of accountability Detroit respects.

Pull up: Pistons vs. Celtics — Tuesday, October 20, 3 p.m. ET, at home (NBC/Peacock). Go see the big man in person.
